Selecting your outfits before a photography session is one of the most important (and fun) parts of getting ready for your session!
To save you some work and help inspire you, I’ve put together some Pinterest boards with suggested outfit stylings based on different types of photo sessions. Each board also has personalized tips at the top, specific to this type of session!
Be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this page for more info as you prepare for your session.
I hope this helps you as you get excited for photos!

Take some time to plan out your outfits (and shoes!) for your session. When choosing outfit colors for your session, try to select colors that POP and complement your skin tone. I personally love neutrals, and lighter tones as these are less likely to reflect onto your skin (imagine holding a neon orange shirt up to your face lol!)
I also love deeper color choices too! Both are beautiful, depending on your personal preference! Be sure to choose outfits that you LOVE and feel good in!
If you are taking photos with others (couples, families, etc.) be sure to try on your clothes together. If one person’s outfit has a strong pattern, or standout textures, choose solids for the other person.
Be sure your clothes are clean and ironed or steamed so they are good to go on your session date. Don’t forget to pair in some stylish, clean shoes!
Accessories are always a fun way to switch up your look! Scarves and hats as well as layers like jackets
or sweaters are easy to add and remove to give you variety and even more pose options.
If it’s in your budget, hiring a professional makeup artist can make a difference because these artists are trained to do makeup that is going to last and photograph well.
If you’re doing your own makeup, plan to wear slightly heavier makeup than normal, including blemish concealer, blush, and consider lip color slightly darker than your lip color.
*For couple’s photos please be certain to choose a long-lasting lip stain rather than lipstick than can smudge or transfer*
If you’re having professional hair or makeup done, please let me know so I can be sure to tag them online!
If you like nail polish, please be sure your nails are freshly painted, not chipped.
In most cases we will plan to walk around to a variety of locations. In order to make the best use of our time, please be sure to pack everything you need in a bag that we can carry around. Remember, your session is based on the sunset time and we want to make the best use of the light before the sun sets.
Hair brush, face blotters, any makeup touch-up items, lint roller (especially if you have pets!), and a small mirror.
As you know, most of my clients choose two outfits for their session.
You are also more than welcome to bring your future college apparel! This is easy to swap out to change up the look and is great for announcements.
If you have your cap and gown (+ hood, tassels, and any other regalia) be sure to bring that as well!
My goal is for you to absolutely love your photos, as well as the experience of taking them. Please let me know if there are any special ideas you have, anything you’d like me to know about you before your session, or any visions you have for your shoot! Also, know that I will help guide you into natural poses for photos that look and feel like YOU!
